When Daniel first helped design the Youth Room at Broad Street Church of Christ in 2008, his vision was for an atmosphere and place completely unique to the rest of the building. To achieve this goal, he enlisted the help of the youth group in picking out paint, furniture, carpet etc., and he really allowed them to make the space their own. What resulted was an area that was functional for the staff, and loved by the youth.

By 2014 though, the building was in need of a revamp, and an entirely new batch of students was looking to express their identity in the space.

Daniel again decided to let the youth group reimagine the room. They chose the design theme, helped create a custom pallet wall, hung lights, a TV, etc. All they had left to choose was a floor.
Laying the vinyl adhesive
When Daniel contacted South Cypress about flooring, he knew he wanted something durable and easy to install with an aged wood or driftwood type look. He also needed it to work with his concrete sub-floor. After talking to Daniel, we decided that the 36” x 6” Congoleum Endurance Plank was the perfect fit for his project.
Installing the floor in 6″ x 36″ planks
The previous floor was carpet tile, so in order to prepare the subfloor for installation Daniel had to remove the carpet tile and scrape any major imperfections on the subfloor that the previous flooring left behind.
First 4 foot section complete
Once the subfloor was prepared, Daniel applied the vinyl adhesive using a glue trowel and began installation. Daniel started in the middle of the room and worked outwards in four foot sections.
In terms of color, Daniel wanted vintage tones that would complement the industrial warehouse feel that the students had created in the space. He decided to go with the Oak Driftwood color. It matches perfectly with the awesome graffiti artwork and custom wood pallet wall. It really brings the whole space together!
This flooring really gives the space a rustic industrial feel
One of Daniel’s favorite things about the space is its versatility. The room is used for everything from movie nights to Bible class, and the new look of the room gives it an improved ambiance that everyone enjoys.
The finished floor!
This particular flooring is a very durable surface that can withstand the wear and tear of dozens of rambunctious middle school students while not sacrificing anything in style. Another added benefit of the floor is that it’s much simpler to clean. This allows the youth group to feel free to bring in food or drinks without worry of permanent damage.
Both the youth and the staff love the new look!
For anyone thinking of completing a similar job, Daniel encourages you to not be intimidated by the size of the project. Although the installation process was slightly time consuming to do right (about 13 work hours in all), he says it was very straight forward and simple to accomplish. You may be a little sore the next day, but it is well worth it once you see the finished product!
