When installing your new floor, it’s imperative that you start out with a flat, level surface. By eliminating dips and bumps, you’ll achieve greater stability and avoid uneven spots which can affect the look, feel and even the safety of a new floor installation. Depending on the condition of your subfloor and the finish floor materials being installed, you can accomplish this goal in one of several ways including substrates and patching compounds.
Plywood and Concrete Substrates
Substrate refers to any surface which exists below another surface for purposes of stability and proper leveling. In flooring, it’s used to create flat surfaces which finish floor materials (such as tile, laminate or hardwood) can be affixed to evenly and uniformly. These backing boards are often made from plywood or cement and typical applications call for ¼ to ½” in terms of thickness.
In some cases, the subfloor itself will be suitable for installing your flooring material of choice. However, you must still ensure that your work surface is smooth and even in order to avoid lippage, or height differences between individual tiles. If you have just a few small trouble spots or gaps, a patch product can be a quick and easy solution.
However, if you’re working with a particularly rough and spotty surface, self-leveling cement might be a better choice. This type of compound allows you to smooth over larger areas much more quickly, as it will naturally flow to fill in low points before setting to a hard consistency suitable for supporting your new installation.
One of the best options on the market today to improve your substrate are underlayment membranes. These uncoupling membranes will provide a solid substrate to install on and will also provide waterproofing protection.
